Ran the WordPress 4.5 update and of course the site went down due to the Visual Composer issue. We’re running Newspaper 4 and found that VC no longer worked. Tried to deactivate and crashed the site and corrupted the theme. Was able to manually update via FTP to Visual Composer 4.11.2.1 so site is live again. All elements were deleted from all sidebars so we need to build them again, but finding that widgets overlap due to Visual Composer shortcodes in place without ability to edit using Visual Composer.
Wondering if there is any way to get any version of Visual Composer working with Newspaper 4? Can’t figure out how to “downgrade” to previous WordPress version so would prefer to make VC active again. Would appreciate any thoughts.

Unfortunately we are unable to offer any advice for this. You will eventually have to grab the bull by the horns and update to newspaper 6 as more and more elements will stop working with your version. Right now, your visual composer is not working, your social counter’s facebook is not working and more and more elements will start to break in time as facebook, wordpress, visual composer all advance and get update while your theme stays the same version.
You can downgrade wordpress if you want to buy a bit more time.

We are aware of all the changes made from newspaper 4 to newspaper 6, and that it might take a bit of time to re-create some of the pages and elements on your site and we are sorry for the inconvenience, but we will try to assist in any way we can if you make this decision.

Thank you for the quick reply and your candid feedback. We were finally able to get VC 4.11.2.1 to update manually and needed to reload both Newspaper and the child theme we created, so we have a temporary fix.
I understand that running the update will be both helpful and painful, needing to rebuild certain pages and elements, so I think we’re moving ahead with that over the next few weeks. Wondering if there is anywhere that outlines the benefits/improvements in Version 6 over Version 4, so I am better able to explain the value of making the extra effort? I see extra flexibility in block and module layouts, better stability and design, etc. Would appreciate a link or direction to a couple of forum posts (?) which might give a more complete outline. Saw the link to update process so pretty sure we can figure it out.

This definitely will be worth your time as there are quite a big number of improvements from version 4. Unfortunately the code was changed altogether in order to get here so you might want to create a back-up before you start with the update just to be on the safe side. please follow these forum posts about the subject:

Okay, I am assuming that the “update script” will also help with importing some settings, etc.

I can see the list of features for Newspaper 6 but not clear which are new or improved? We are going to need to convince client that the new functionality and updates are worth the extra work.
