I am using the Newspaper theme for http://www.daydreamdistrict.com. I haven’t done any modifications, it’s the pure theme. I have now received a warning message from Google that my website does not comply to Adsense policy! If I don’t change it, they will block my account! Is the Newspaper theme not compliant to Adsense policy?? Here Google’s email:

In newspaper only inline content ad is mobile responsive. And the big limitation is we can have only one inline ad. There is no option provided by theme author to add more inline ads (after paragraph 3, 6, 8 etc). If you show the ads above and below content, the banner ads work fine in desktop view. But in mobile they take lot of space. Sometimes I get a big ad box in mobile if i place the banner ad. I was about to raise a support ticket and I saw your question.

Theme is fully compliant with AdSense.
Sidebar ads are responsive, inline ads are responsive — if you use responsive adsense code. Theme just puts your Adsense code into the spot, so you need to use responsive ads for a responsive theme/layout.
Have been using theme for 3+ years with AdSense with zero issues.
Sidebar ads are responsive but not the ads on top content and below content. Yes i am using responsive adsense code provided by google. Can you tell me your website link ?.
Move your ads on mobile to below the fold. Try using plugins like adinserter or adinjection to insert ads. I would recommend not to use any ad on above the fold for mobile devices. Hope this helps. 🙂

If i display above content ad and below content the ads are shown fine on desktop but google says the ad should be after the content. Secondly on mobile they either show up as big square box or take too long space.
Why should i use any other plugin when the theme has got it’s ads system. I believe the theme author should add options to display inline ads after let’s say some number of paragraphs. Let me repeat inline ad code works fine both in desktop and mobile devices.

thanks for your answer, but I would really expect that the Newspaper theme is Adsense compliant out of the box and that I would not have to manually tinker with ad placement! What do the official theme creators say about this issue here???

Adsense has strict rules on how to use ads. The theme is 100% compliant but it;s how you use the ads that matters. for example the sticky sidebar used to be a big problem as people placed their ad codes in the sidebar and adsense did not allow a sticky ads. You seem to have 2 ads one on top of the other. I’m not sure exactly but i would ask google for help rather than here as they are the ones that make the rules, not us. We try to provide options for users to place the ad wherever they want to. You can select different sizes for your ads from the theme panel ads section, you can select the number of paragraphs for the inline ad, There are header ads, article top ads, bottom article bottom ads, footer ads., …etc.It is only so much we can do in this regard.
Here is a simple test. Try to use “adrotate” and that way the theme ad system will no longer be used so the theme will no longer interfere. What I can say is that our theme is compliant with the adsense TOS but this is very personal and each individual can use the theme settings to their advantage or the opposite.
The theme simply renders the ads. How you set them and where, it’s up to you.

We had an ad banner full width below the banner across top of all our sites for almost 10 years in Adsense, above the two content columns, with no issues. Even switching to Newspaper then NEwsmag 1.0.

then we “hid” that above the content banner on mobile devices (phones), per the options in the ad panel (*show desktop, tablet; hide mobile).
So, desktop and tablet got above the fold ads, mobile got bottom of content ads or the sidebar.
Bow with Newsmag 3.1 I’ve just been lazy on the final optimization, due to the Aug 5 server crash, and just loading one ad in the sidebar on all devices; which tucks below on mobile.
So, you just need to “plan” how your ads appear on devices and go TEST them — obviously — .
The theme is compliant; it’s up to you to “engineer” your ad placements to fit your needs.
For example for some folks, not using Adsense, having an ad unit for a movie opening, above the fold on a movie website, might not be crazy.
But obviously, for good UX, you should not have the top half of your iphone view of an article be an ad box; but should show the story title and/or story photo/image.
Food for thought, anyway.
Change the Adsense size for mobile to 250×250, instead of auto, in the Header Ad section.

thanks for your reply. But: I simply used one of the example sites that comes with your theme. I did not manually add some ads somewhere. Therefore I don’t think you can claim that your theme is 100% compliant, because I simply plugged in my adsense code (all which is the responsive kind) and got this email from Google, which is quite disturbing.
Probably you should check all of your example setups within the theme for compliance! I am wondering now what actions I should take, since I do like your theme and the example setup I used.

Yes, I understand what you mean. However, I have had the same problem with other “Adsense compliant themes”. Therefore, I now keep an iPhone 5 (because of it’s small size) mainly to check how my ads look on small devices. This is especially important for the first ad on your site.
I still have an issue and i’m not sure if everyone is having the same issue.
I am testing 1 addd (sidebar add) 380 by 360, in Auto resize mode. The add shows when clicking categories, it also shows in a few posts (all posts are created the same). However, it doesn’t show in most posts (when clicking the article). Any idea why?

@insomniac79 our example ads that we placed in our demos, were just placed as a demo for you to see what goes where. hey were not set according to any google rule, but rather just as an example. the theme provides multiple ad spots and multiple ad sizes for each viewport. It is up to you how you use them. The theme cannot know what ads you want to use and how you want them or how google wants them. The theme provides multiple settings and it;s up to each individual to how he uses these settings.

Just to add my two cents to this:
Both Newspaper and Newsmag work perfectly well with AdSense. If you are having problems with AdSense compliance, it is most likely that you are entering ad codes incorrectly or you have a conflict with a plugin somewhere that is causing the ad code to display incorrectly.
I have run AdSense (and others) to the maximum limits allowed by Google with Newspaper and Newsmag for more than 18 months, with over 3 million page views in that time, with no violations or warnings from Google.
AdSense allows you to be quite lazy and just insert responsive ads into any of the tagDiv ad slots and it will automatically select an ad size which fits. Or you can use a specific ad unit size code, and then use the theme to re-size the ad for different devices. Experiment with different ad units and formats, as well as synchronous and asynchronous ads, to find out what works best for your site.
No theme can be bulletproof in guaranteeing perfect compliance with changing policies from Google AdSense, but the tagDiv themes seem to be better than pretty much any others out there.
Just a chime in on this one – AdSense has always been unusable for me – Using AdRotate OR as responsive code in Theme Panel – is never has worked so I now don’t use it at all – it jumps about and ads are delivered in different dimensions whatever I do- whether I specify a size in Panel or not – nothing fixes it – not a complaint perhaps it’s something else in my setup – just noting that never had much success with it. Inline Adsense works best and is responsive – but then delivers an unresponsive square ad next – this spoils reader experience

AdSense may serve a smaller ad than the maximum size allowed by your settings if it pays better. This can look odd if you have a 300×250 ad in a spot where you have specified 970×250, but it shouldn’t ever overlap your content.
Ok that sounds about right – I do well from sold ads so not the end of the world but it is revenue lost – it does disturb readers though on smartphones – which is 80% so just not worth the potential annoyance
