I would like to update my website to the newest version of Newspaper, but this website has not been updated since 7.6. I do not want it to cause any issues and am trying to get some support on this.
I would try on a test environment. Safer. If everything goes fine, just do the same on your real environment.
I am not really sure how to accomplish this. Can you help?
Do you realize some backups of your website using a plugin like Duplicator or alternatives?
If yes, you can set up a server environment on your own personal computer and import your website with your backup file and test in local. If you are on a Mac, you can use Local by Flywheel for instance. It does everything for you.
But if you don’t want to reinstall it and do not care about having a down time if you need to reinstall your website, just do a backup of your website and then try the update. If it works, no further action. If it does not work, just delete your website and then reinstall your saved package through SFTP.

You should try Arnaud suggestion, also please note that last version of Newspaper is v10.3.3 is most like a new theme, therefore the update from v7.6 will need a lot for adjustment, that were made step by step in each update.
