I noticed that when a user clicks on the published article author badge at the bottom of the page, has a broken link that just refreshes the page to the homepage. Would it be possible to send the user over to a user page that offers the viewers more information on the author.

I see that clicking on the author name anywhere, directs to the homepage. That usually means that the author archives are disabled in the Yoast settings

Disabling the author archives will redirect all author page links to the homepage. You could check if that is the case.
