I just changed my theme over to the newspaper theme as I am updating the site. I notice that when I do so, all of my featured images seem to break.
Also, when I try to add or edit widgets, I no longer see any place to put widgets.

You have to regenerate the thumbnails, each theme uses different thumb sizes, check this guide on how to do this – https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-fix-strange-thumbnails/
Not sure what you mean with the widget issue, please provide more details. Normally the widgets can be added on the Appearance -> Widgets section – http://screencast.com/t/7TCJnbde

When I try to regenerate thumbnails, it tells me that none of the original images sources can be found, though I can see them. Here is what the images look like in the media editor.

I cannot add widgets because there is no place to add them to in the appearance > widgets section, not to mention the only widgets I see that are available are the default wordpress ones. I see no extra Newspaper widgets.
Looks like
1) you have issue with your media section if you can’t see thumbnails (not seen in the screen shot you provided); try changing back to twenty-twelve theme and look at your media section to see if thumbs are showing.
2) you didn’t install the theme properly.
You did turn off caching prior to install, correct?
Clear cache after switch to new theme?
Did turn off any plugins which came with prior theme prior to theme switch?
If you can’t see widgets, or the widget areas, it means something isn’t installed properly.

@DigitalEmpathy Considering the fact that you have the twenty fourteen theme active here: http://screencast.com/t/QsEIz8nAr I believe you need to install and activate the theme from appearance > themes panel: http://screencast.com/t/ndflayPjPUSp so make sure you install the theme like this: https://forum.tagdiv.com/installation/ then activate it, install Visual Composer plugin and check again.
