I had someone help with increasing my page speed, he said that what is slowing it down is the requests for so many fonts. Is this true? Why are there so many requests for fonts? Is there an update that will decrease this? Thanks

the theme is loading 5 fonts from google : http://screencast.com/t/3UDpAv1BN
are you using custom typography options? http://screencast.com/t/pScPd9G6A7n , if yes this is a source from where fonts can load. another source for fonts are the plugins that you have installed.
