Since updating to the newspaper theme we no longer get the red notification against posts when a contributor has submitted content for approval.
Have you seen this issue before, or know how to fix it?

Hello,
This is not theme related. WordPress is the one providing these notifications, not the theme. I have also tested this on the twentysixteen theme but no notifications are shown. It seems WordPress removed them
