Post on Pages VS Categories in Theme and Changing Permalinks?

Hello,

I have asked this a question, a few times, and cannot get a clear answer. I’d appreciate if I can get a clear answer how NewsPaper 9 theme works and why this function is designed in this way, I want to put it on 5 websites. so I need a detailed, clear answer with more patience to understand my question exactly, please…..

Here is the issue: All major news networks have sections Politics, Heath, Tech, China, etc, and the permalinks show for example cnn.com/health/article, same with Epoch Times, epochtimes.com/health/article. Newspaper 9, has pages and categories where posts can be posted. If I put on categories, it says mywebstite.com/categories/tech/article… So every post I do says category than shows the article in the permalink. I think the answer I got from you guys was change the Permalinks. But my question wasn’t answered, to weather the posts should come from pages attached to each topic section and relate to categories or categories attached to each topic section? And is so, how would each option work in the theme? Please read point 2 below that further clarify’s my statement here.

2. All the other websites, are they building each section on their news websites like tech, sports, politics, ect on Category feature or giving each section their own pages? For example I have currently, the home page, and all the new articles get posted there, and can relate to other categories. How would it work if I had 10 sections, and 10 pages, how would the category feature work? Basically I need to know how they can relate to each other if I give each section its own page, vs put all sections on a category on only the home page? And how is that compared to the way all major news websites on WordPress is built like The Epoch Times, NY Times, Bloomberg, CNN, FOX, etc?

Please answer this clearly? Thank you very much, and to the person who answered my questions before, it is just that it’s a little more specific and important to all my 5 websites I am building may be with Newspaper 9.

Hi,

I will try to help you.

1. Please note that it’s not the theme that ads “category” in the permalink. It depends on your wordpress permalink settings. The category base can be changed or removed if needed, the most popular method as far as I know is with the Yoast SEO plugin
https://kb.yoast.com/kb/how-to-remove-the-categories-prefix/
https://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-change-the-category-base-prefix-in-wordpress/
You could try these if you want to change/remove the category base from the URL. Note that if you remove the /category/ from the URL, you will probably have to create redirects from the old URLs to the new ones – https://www.blogstand.com/change-category-base-prefix-wordpress/

2. It is up to you how you create pages, and organize categories and posts. You can create as many categories as you want, they will each have a category page automatically, this is basic wordpress functionality. Also you can create as many pages as you want, build them with the composer and add the elements you want, displaying the posts you want.

I believe the most common method is to simply display categories in the main menu, visitors can browse through them as they want and easily get to the content they want. But if you want you can also display pages in the menu, this is not so popular as far as I know.

Let me know if you have more questions, or if I misunderstood something.

Thanks

Hi Simion,
Thank you for answering, I think I almost get it, but need further clarification PLEASE, As I just purchased 2 more licenses, and will purchase 1 more.
1. Bloomberg, NY Times, CNN, Epoch Times, Are these news websites building each cagegory as pages? Because non of their permalinks show the name “category or page, rather just the topic and subtopic.
2. I still can’t figure out, If I have one page and 15 topics under categories, or 15 pages? If I choose a page to represent each top or subtopic, how do I tell the theme to display the post in the appropriate page, as well as the Home page if I choose? Basically, I would like most new posts to stay display on the home page, and some to just display on its own individual page, and may be show on the hompe pages in a small section of recent articles. In this sense, I don’t understand the difference in how the posts will relate, work, appear, on pages vs categories.
3. I have 2 options.
A. Have Home page and 15 pages for each topic, have latest post appear on home page and the individual top page?
B. Have Home Page and 15 categories, and have latest post appear on home page, and categories?
Well, What is the difference between A and B? It seems the same to me, no?

Please clarify in detail, very much appreciate it Simion. I want to finalize this, and take this platform for all my websites with Newspaper 9
Thank you Simion,
Cyrus

1. Out of those websites looks like only http://www.theepochtimes.com uses WordPress, I could be wrong however.
But I am sure that all the elements in the header menu are categories, for example
https://www.theepochtimes.com/c-us-politicshttp://prntscr.com/ogohc9
This would be the post commonly used and easy to manage method.

2. A page can contain any element available in the composer, and display the posts you want. You can use blocks and grids to display the posts you want. Each block can be filtered, so for example in one block you can display posts from a “politics” category, in another one posts from a “lifestyle” category.
These categories will also have a category page, where only the posts from them will be displayed automatically. So for example in the “politics” category page only posts have this as a category will appear, same as on the website I checked above.
In a page any post can be displayed, this depends on what content you want to filter by manually. Here is a block settings guide – https://forum.tagdiv.com/block-settings-guide/

3.

A. You can create pages and not use the category pages. But you will have to create them and build them, filter the elements in them to only display posts from respective categories.

B. On the other hand category pages are already available by default, can have templates set and there are settings for them.

Both methods will work, but the easiest would be the B variant. There are less actual benefits from using the A variant. But you can choose either.

Hi Simion,

1. Thank you for a thorough answer. So if I choose option B, than I need to change the permalinks on every post that I make, so it doesn’t say category, is that correct? And some other reconnecting of codes? I think you mentioned something in that extent in a previous post.
2. I plan to run newspaper 9 on up to 5 websites. I am concerned about newsletter membership security and being able to take the members information to another provider at anytime if I choose. Mailchimp members info are stores as a third party. Is there one that major news uses?
3. For donation, is there 1-2 that you would recommend for best use? There is paypal, give, etc. And need a vendor.
4. I want to post one article with newspaper 9 on one website, but have display in another website that has newspaper 9, same theme, simultaneously, how may I do that?
5. And how do I import a finished Newspaper 9 theme, to another website where I would have another license?

Thank you,
Cyrus

Mr. Simion, one for question to the 5 I just asked. How do I imput a code in the post so that people cannot copy and past it for copy right reasons?
Thanks,
Cyrus

Hi,

1. Once removed the category base (meaning the word category in the URL) will not show anymore on all the post links. Then it will depend on the permalink structure you choose in wordpress settings – http://prntscr.com/oh8l48
The website mentioned above https://www.theepochtimes.com/ uses a post name permalink structure from what I can see. So the URL will be example.com/post-name, no category base or category name.

2. You could check some online guides mentioning best free or premium newsletter plugins. Mailchimp is one of the most popular ones as far as I know
https://www.formget.com/best-free-wordpress-newsletter-email-marketing-plugins/

3. I really can’t say, maybe try some of these – https://www.sitepoint.com/best-donation-plugins-for-wordpress/

4. By default WordPress cannot do this. maybe it could be done with a plugin, check this topic for some plugin suggestions – https://www.quora.com/How-do-I-publish-manage-blog-posts-from-single-Wordpress-website-to-multiple-Wordpress-websites

5. The theme can export the theme panel settings only – https://forum.tagdiv.com/import-export-theme-settings/
So all the settings made in the theme panel, ad codes, custom codes etc can be exported and used in a different location where the theme is installed.

There are content protection plugins to try and prevent these actions. I believe this one is quite widely used – https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-content-copy-protection/
There could still be ways to bypass it, but it should block the vast majority of the attempts.

You could try others as well – https://wordpress.org/plugins/tags/content-protection/

Thanks
