Not sure if this has to do with WordPress or Newspaper, but I noted a strange thing. While editing individual post setting https://gyazo.com/0e3d62f1f50b69054865e704547b8286 if I click on a different template and Preview changes and leave the page *without* clicking on Update, the new setting becomes permanent. To ensure it wasn’t due to cache, I went back and forth and seems like there is an issue. You may want to look into it. Thanks.

Hello,
I have tested this on my end and I have added it to our bug list. We will look into this and hopefully it will be fixed in a future version of the theme.
