Regenerate Thumbnails question

Hi,

As I was running the regenerate thumbnails tool, it creates the new thumbnails on top of the existing ones. Is there a way to make the tool to completely remove the various thumbs and generate only the ones needed?

I have 98.000 images, and this would significantly increase the filespace for my site.

Ok, I found solution.

There is a plugin called “Force Regenerate Thumbnails”.

It does exactly the same job as “Regenerate Thumbnails”, but it also removes those thumbs not used by the current version of the theme, thus saving “junk” file space on thubs that would never be shown anyway.

I already use that since last year,it’s a very good plugin because it removed all those old images sizes from old theme and build new images for the current theme your using…

I was just thinking the same thing after changing to the newspaper theme, but have found that even though Force Regenerate Thumbnails performs an excellent job of re-crunching the images and deleting any outdated sizes, it’s actually creating more images than we had before due to the Newspaper theme image settings.

We need to use 5/6 different sizes of featured images to show properly across the site (category, search, related etc) but Force Regenerate Thumbnails is re-doing ALL of our images, not just our featured one’s. We normally have 5-10 full size images per post and don’t need to generate 5/6 unwanted versions per image.

Is it possible to just regenerate the featured images as this wold work perfectly? There is another regen plugin called Ajax Thumbnail Rebuild that works very well, but it doesn’t delete the unwanted versions like Force Regen does.

🙁

@jamespayne here is a tip for you in your theme panel settings turn off the images settings that you don’t want and leave what you will use on your site in this way only the images for those blocks you need will be regenerate thumbnails….this is a awesome feature that was put in V6 take use of it…

@Steven – I’ve already done that (you’re right, it is a good feature) – My problem is that I don’t want to regenerate all of my image uploads, just the featured images, as they are the one’s that are affected by changing the theme.

Hi,

Try a different regenerate plugin, an example would be – http://screencast.com/t/VOuqkjWwr9fhttps://wordpress.org/plugins/ajax-thumbnail-rebuild/

I didn’t do any tests with this plugin so i can’t say if it will work, it’s just an example. If it doesn’t work please look for an alternative.

Thank you!
