Remove Featured Image in single.php for Standard Post Format

I notice that if you turn off the featured images it turns off the featured videos as well. This is problematic for me. I need to keep the featured images on, however I do not like the crop effect on the featured images in the standard posts and need to either set the height on standard posts to auto or remove the featured images all together and just insert the image into the post manually.

I’ve been searching through the code trying to figure out where I would do this. I’m fairly well versed in the wordpress codex but trying to find how you coded it and where it’s at has been problematic.
