I simply want to change the name of “Similar Articles” to something else (the recommended articles–particularly when falling under the “Featured” category–aren’t always similar). Is there any way to do this?

Yes you can go to Theme Panel > ‘Translations’ and find the Similar Articles text and change it to what you want.
