is it possible to resize the featured image to 100% in desktop view? i have images which are only 500-550px wide and it looks awkward on desktop, would like it to fit the entire width of space for the featured image. thanks!

WordPress cannot upsize images … we use a free plugin called “thumbnail upscale” — also listed on my “what I use” list on the sticky optimization topic, if you want to read through that. 🙂
