I have imported many featured images from a previous non-tagDiv WordPress installation. The images have different dimensions from the dimensions used for the Newspaper theme.
My question is whether there is a setting or hack to make these photos fit in the thumbnail/preview sizes on the home page and on archive pages. Right now, they are being cropped to fit, which looks terrible.

No, this is not the case. When using big grids, you can see the images is not in right dimensions. You told me to use the plugin mentioned above, but this would not work out. What to do?

Also please try to use the some flex blocks, those have more options then classic blocks, also you can achieve with flex all the blocks layout.
