we use your 1.3 theme (we made a lot of changes, we must not upgrade 🙂 ), and we need just need to replace Big Grid with Slider in category pages. so the easiest way to do this?

I am a bit confusing about your request. Please keep in mind that the Big Grid do not exist in 1.3 version of Newspaper but only the Slider for the category page. You cannot implement something that does not exist, sorry! If you want to display more levels in our theme and you are not aware of the steps in this regard, please consider hiring a freelancer/developer to do this for you because we cannot provide customization services at the moment, sorry!
However, if you want to have the latest features in our theme, please try to update the theme to the latest version of the theme (v.6.7) but please notice that all your customizations will be lost and you will have to reconfigure all your website from scratch, because all thew code was changed.

Unfortunately, our theme does not have such an option nor for Newsmag, sorry! Please notice that is not a simple task to be implemented this kind of feature and to dot that involves custom work. Please consider hiring a freelancer/developer if you want to add some additional options in our theme because we cannot provide customization services at the moment, sorry!
