Showcase of sites using this theme?

I’d love to see a showcase of sites using this theme creatively so we can be inspired as well as get some ideas on how to best use it.

At the least, maybe folks can link their websites in this thread for us to check out.

Still converting some of the first pages which had images “placed” in the post, to use only the featured image.

Still importing content from one of our other sites which is being retired.

Upshot – not yet done.

Should officially re-launch Jan 2015. Yay. 🙂

(NOTE: I started to do the site with Newspaper before switching to Newsmag, so I have not yet fully optimized the theme for “maximum PageSpeed” as I had done with Newspaper.)

Thanks, will take a gander! Your pagespeed comment reminds me that’s something I need to do as well – I confess to worrying the theme can handle our site traffic. We average around 50-60 million pageviews annually and this theme is “larger” than our prior one. Going to be interesting.

I plan to significantly overhaul my website with the new update of Newsmag, which fixes a few issues I had been having with the theme, so I’ll share my site when that’s done (presumably by next Wednesday). The changes I’ll be making will be somewhat custom so my site may not end up looking 100% like the default layouts that the theme comes with, even with the numerous ways to use modules/blocks, just to be clear.

Welcome, Ecofame! Look forward to it, Aedlin. The more custom, the better. I’d like to see what we can really do aside from the default looks.

I have not yet updated my theme to the latest version; I think it’s still 1.1, so likely my site isn’t best choice for checking snippets at the moment.

But you are correct, this page also doesn’t pass the validation, which it did with the Newspaper theme:

The issue has been rectified. It was due to that damn Revolution Slider plugin that for the life of me I don’t recall ever using. I’d advise the makers of Newsmag to stop even providing the plugin as an optional add on. It’s not even necessary for the theme to function.

This was the worst possible time for something like this to happen, but technically the best in an ironic kind of way; this time of year finds our sites with less than normal traffic.

Just as FYI, you should delete *all* optional plugin you don’t use for *any/all* WordPress site(s). And don’t activate ANY plugins you don’t actually use (e.g., Jetpack, or Rev Slider – which had a notable security flaw prior to Spring 2014, but is *not* an issue with the version included with Newsmag!). Also evaluate “recommended” “suggested” and “required” as distinct different meanings with plugins that come bundled with themes.

Revolution Slider is a great plugin, used by all kinds of famous and large websites, as well as many WordPress sites. For some themes, it’s as popular as Visual Composer, as it’s one of the top such plugins to do fly-in words and slogans (which show up as SEO text on a home page, on top of images) and things that used to be done with FLASH; so it’s not “bad” inherently, but like all plugins has some caveats that one needs to keep up on and consider possible performance issues. It’s more commonly used with a business, ecommerce or corporate layout and not so much a magazine site. But, of course, not everybody who buys a magazine theme wants to actually do a magazine.

Yoast WordPress SEO has had some bugs from time to time. WordPress core has had major security flaws (one of our sites and Al Gore’s website got hacked the same day, back in the day before Automattic got “big” and became more security fanatical); technically WordPress 3.9x was hackable under certain circumstances.

But, I’ll take WP over Drupal any day of the week. I still chuckle when the folks who were making Drupal made such a big deal about open source, better than WordPress, we’ll change the world, etc., and then the “get Firefox” website running on Drupal was famously hacked and defaced. “Oh yeah, we should consider security, too.” … um, duh!

So, good idea to keep up to date on what is going on with plugins. Some are just maintenance releases (e.g., Visual Composer does update because everybody wants a module with blah + blah; doesn’t NEED to be installed). Some updates fix flaws or because a WP update BREAKS the pugin/theme/other plugins in some way (e.g., WP 4.1).

With WordPress – full dot revisions (3.9, 4.0, 4.1, 4.2) bring changes you should double check for plugin compatibility before commit. WP minor dot revisions almost always should be done (e.g., 4.01, 4.02, etc.) as these often have security patches and fixes, and this is easy to look at from the WordPress.org site on WHAT was updated.

I appreciate the comment. Despite being well versed in all things WordPress (after using it for roughly five years now) and understanding how to work the system, the Revolution Slider issue came about because I made the mistake of not seeing that particular plugin on the list of installed plugins as it was similar in name to another plugin I was using. However, the version of Revolution Slider that has been reported to have had issues and caused something like this for many sites was never active on my site. In fact, I’ve only ever had the latest versions of it on my site, and that was only since late October, when I was working with two other themes from another widely used theme provider before finally settling on Tagdiv via Newmag late last month.

Note: I’ve never had the plugin installed outside of themes since I don’t own an independent license and don’t plan on buying one at this point even if the plugin is the best selling in the history of the world on Themeforest.

There are many others who’ve reported that they have in fact upgraded or only used the latest version of Revolution Slider and they also had this happen to them. Not sure how an issue they claim to have fixed in February in the link provided turned into a massive issue with developers, users, etc in September to the point that the plugin couldn’t be sold until the plugin maker provided another new updated version that fixed issues.

Admittedly, I don’t use Revolution Slider with WordPress myself due to these various issues. We do use the HTML version (not running on WordPress) for our main business site, but it doesn’t have the various problems of the php/WP plugin version.

Still, lots of people using it with the theme without any issues, but you know how it goes, not everything works the same for every setup.

I’ve also posted in both forums on various occasions the situation with Revolution Slider vulnerabilities, so it’s not “news” at this point:
