Hope this is possible with Newspaper.
How can I show one fresh post per category. Also if possible, randomize so the site becomes more sticky.
Right now, I have created 10 individuals block 6’s – each assigned to a specific category showing a single post. I’m sure it can be done better!

The best way to use only fresh posts from a category would be to chose a specific category and then use the “latest” sort order feature from block editing, this way you will have all the time the latest post from that category shown into that block.
Another option if you want them random you could use the other 2 sort order type “Random posts today” – would be the best if you add posts daily or “Random posts from last 7 days” – if you add posts once 2 or 3 days for example http://screencast.com/t/LezYULX5i
