Hi guys,
I was wondering what happened. I installed the new theme update but now the side bar in my posts has dissapeared. What happened? How do I fix this? the side bar had my adsens adds, social counter and another widget, am I supposed to go and build all that again from scratch?
Changing themes ‘deactivates’ widgets in sidebars; this is part of WordPress and nothing to do with the theme. If you look at your appearance > widgets, they may still be there, but in a deactivated section; so yes, you need to re-drag items to your sidebar.
In future when changing themes, I think there is a plugin out there which ‘saves widgets in place’ for changing themes, but WP does this due to different themes having different widgets, classes, styles, queries for custom widgets not part of WP core — and site might crash if you’re trying to load a whole bunch of widgets that call php scripts and functions that don’t exist in new theme vs old one.
Welcome to WordPress – it’s an adventure! 🙂
I’m about to migrate one site from TD NewsMag to TD IONmag — and literally making copies of my custom text widgets right this moment, due to the same issue. There is a plugin supposedly for this, but rather have the backups anyway.
At least WP usually does include them as deactivated widgets on the appearance menu — they didn’t even used to do that!
