Everything was fine until we updated Visual Composer to new version. Now the sidebar is not working on the homepage.

For the Homepage, I have used Visual Composer. I have a 2/3+1/3 layout with a Block 11 and Widgetized Sidebar.
Any ideas what has gone wrong?

Try to update the theme at V 7.3 which is available on themeforest, clear all caches then test the site again. Also I’ve noticed that you’re using child theme so try to deactivate it then then check how t goes. If the problem is caused by the child theme try to update it to the newer version included in theme’s path: http://screencast.com/t/s3BU8yNq1

Hi there – I’m Dave’s slightly more technical sidekick.
So I switched back to the unedited theme. Then replaced 7.2 with 7.3 and all seemed to work.
I tried making a cut down version of the child theme that overrides nothing at all but even that seemed to halt the side bar.
At the present time (after switching back to the unaltered 7.3) the sidebar space is there but it doesn’t seem populated. I’ve flushed caches on the server (Litespeed) and with Cloudflare.

Yes the site works with vanilla 7.3 and the sidebar is fine.
However: I’m trying to get a child theme working and every time I turn the child theme on the homepage messes up and the sidebar disappears.
Here’s what I’ve done:

That’s it, no other changes made yet (I’ve got a screenshot.png file in the folder too).
As soon as I select that child the sidebar suddenly jumps to the bottom of the page, before the footer.

You did not set the priority for the action in your code. Try to replace the last line with this one and check how it goes:

Blimey! That was somewhat easy. Strange because I copied and pasted my code direct from the WordPress instructions on creating a child theme.
That seems to have worked, I’ll slowly try to add back in the changes I had made on 7.2.
