Sidebar not working on posts or pages

Hi

I hope you can help with a problem

We are developing a new site using Newsmag and everything was working until we updated the theme yesterday. Now only the home page is showing any sidebar content – all other posts and pages have an empty sidebar. The site is due to go live on 1st January so this is very urgent.

The site can be viewed at http://www.breedingnews.com/testsite

Regards

Peter

You might need to go back to the appearance > widgets page and “resave” the widget/sidebar.

This happens sometimes with a theme update and if caching wasn’t disabled, and sometimes from disabling the theme to update it.

This happened to me with latest update where my home page custom sidebar was missing many of its widgets and had to drag them back on and reset. In my case it was also because I replaced some plugins and didn’t have them “on” when I switched the new theme back on, so the widgets got disabled for missing plugin. Doh.

Might not be your issue, but worth a try. 🙂

Hi

Now when I go to the appearance-widgets page there is no sidebar showing. Toward the bottom of the page it now shows a message “Inactive sidebar – the sidebar is no longer available and does not show anywhere on your site. Remove each of the widgets below to fully remove this inactive sidebar”

For some odd reason it looks like your sidebar got trashed if you created a custom sidebar. If no default sidebars for the theme are shown, it may mean the theme didn’t get updated properly.

Simply deactivate theme, delete old theme folder, re-upload theme, then activate again. I’ve had this happen to me also. Fun with WordPress 😉 (oh wait, it’s *not* fun!)

Hi

This is a feature of a plugin I use for the paid membership section of the site – s2MemberPro

Hi,

Please post some images with the sidebar area. Do you use special characters on the sidebar name? if you do delete those sidebars and create new ones using Latin characters (no special characters) in their name.

Thank you, Emil G.

Hi Emil

I hope the attachments show what you need. If it is easier I could give you temporary admin access to the site.

Hi,
Drag the widgets in Default Sidebar, or if you want a custom one only for posts Create a new sidebar from Theme Panel -> Template settings http://screencast.com/t/vUHh3n8JnSW7

Then populate the sidebar with your widgets from Appearance -> Widgets

Thanks!

Hi Alin

Yes I know I can make a new Sidebar – problem is the Default sidebar I was originally using does nat appear in the Template settings any more

As noted previously if you’re missing functions of the actual theme, including the “Newsmag Default” sidebar, then you likely have one of the two cases:
1) conflicting plugin
2) theme not updated properly.

for 1) try turning off all plugins except VC, clearing all caches
for 2) delete existing theme folder; install clean version of theme

Only reason something part of the theme is “not there” is
a) something blocking loading elements in admin panel, typically plugin with bad behavior
b) theme missing components due to incomplete install.
c) broken cache loading old files not seeing new files (common with some cache plugins, or CDNs)

Simple as that. 🙂
