Smart List issue navigating back to original post

I’ve chosen to display a post as a smart list (smart list 3) and I’m experiencing problems with browser navigation.

My slug is:
ice-cream-month

Using the “next” button in my smart list changes the slug to:
ice-cream-month2

Clicking “next” again changes it to:
ice-cream-month2/3

These “slides” contain links to articles on the same domain. Everything works as expected until I use the browser or key commands to go back to the list.

So from my linked article, when I use use the browser’s “back” functionality, the url changes to something I viewed before I was on the smart list post.

I am using Newspaper version 7.2 and WP version 4.5.3

Sorry… just found problem after comparing to another theme license. My permalink structure didn’t include a trailing slash, which seemed to be the problem.
