The featured image is not showing in rich snippets. The correct URL is present in the detected, but the image does not appear.
I have tested different image formats and the only one that I have found to work is by adding thumbnail images, which are not suitable as featured images.

Example of post with regualar feature image that does not appear in snippets:

Is there a setting in the theme somewhere that makes Rich Snippets work with a regular sized feature image? If not, how can I make this work?

How are you testing exactly? The theme has basic and required structured data by default, it doesn’t have any settings in the matter.
To add additional data you could use a plugin, or maybe manually
