Using the social counter plugin from the 6.6.1 version, I was able to get up to the “get access token” part. Then I encountered this error (with actual values redacted):
widgets.php:1 XMLHttpRequest cannot load https://graph.facebook.com/oauth/access_token?client_id=[REDACTED]&client_secret=[REDACTED]&grant_type=client_credentials. The request was redirected to a URL ('about:blank') which has a disallowed scheme for cross-origin requests.
This was in Chrome 46. Then I tried it in Edge, and it worked. So I guess there’s some browser limitation, or maybe it’s just some setting on my system. In any case, just thought I’d let you know in case it helps with the tutorial.

Thank you for sharing this info. We have not encountered this issue before. As you said, it could be browser related if it works on other browsers. If you manage to get it working on chrome as well please post your solution so we know what setting from chrome could interfere with the social counter.
