Sometimes featured images won't display as thumbnails.

Hi there. I’m working on updating this site. I’m populating it with new posts and I know that for each post needs a featured image to serve as the thumbnail for that post. Sometimes the post will register as having a featured image, but that image won’t be displayed as the posts’s thumbnail and there will just be a blank space next to the post. See here. Scroll down to the list posts and 3 of them are missing thumbnail images. I’ve tried re-uploading the images, re-assigning them, and even deleting the post and making a new one. Any idea as to why the thumbnail isn’t displaying?

I should also mention that I’m uploading jpegs, never bigger than a few hundred K, and I am not doing anything differently (that I can tell) from the posts that do properly display the thumbnail. Sometimes it works fine sometimes it doesn’t.

Hello,

It seems there is something affecting the thumbs and making a few of them 1×1 px. That is why you cannot see it. The thumb does not get used at all. You should make sure you have this thumb active in the theme panel: http://screencast.com/t/m60wiEhqTaVk and then use this guide to regenerate your thumbs: https://forum.tagdiv.com/thumbnails-fix-strange-looking-images-on-blocks/

Thank you!

Thanks for the reply. I’m giving this a go, but it looks like it’s going to take 5-6 hours to run through everything and it seems to crash the browser from time to time. We have a lot of images on our site and the backend is just a tangled mess from having so many people work on it over the years (we’re a school publication and bring in a new student every fall to manage the website – recipe for disaster, I know). If this doesn’t work and the thumbnails still don’t show up, is there another step to take?

Okay, it went through all of the images and it didn’t seem to fix the problem. However, most of the resizes were errors. Only 261 out of the 774 images on the site were successfully resized. Still can’t see many of the thumbnails from new posts. Almost all of the Googling and forum searching I’ve done on this recommends using the regenerate thumbnails plugin, so I’m sort of out of ideas. Any further suggestions?

Hello playmyrequest,

I have checked your website, and I did not saw any problems with your featured images. So, please provide some useful screenshots where to explain this issue. Also, you should try suing the Force Regenerate Plugin to regenerate the thumbs, clear all your caches and check the results.

Thanks for your understanding!

Thanks! Yeah, I was able to get most them working. Sometimes it seems to work after uploading an image, and sometimes it doesn’t. I haven’t fixed the issue, but I just brute-forced through it and most of them are working now.

Just as another follow-up, It seems that the issue might be arising from when I upload the images to WordPress. Most of the time after the image upload reaches 100%, that’s all it does, and the image is put into my media library, but even in the library, no thumb shows up. Just the default placeholder. However when I use the image in a post or as one of the larger thumbnails, it works fine, but it won’t show up as a small thumbnail.

The images that do seem to work at all thumbnail sizes are the ones that successfully “crunch” after the image upload. These images have thumbnails visible in the media library and at all other sizes around the site. The problem is that this doesn’t happen most of the time. Most of the time the crunching step is skipped or does not initiate. This seems like a WordPress problem and not a tagDiv problem, but I just thought I’d follow up.

Hello playmyrequest,

Please keep in mind that until now, we do not have any bad reports in this regard. Notice that everything depended on the theme I have turned to follow you know. It could be a WordPress issue, and you should contact them, tell the problem because they should be able to provide a more accurate response.

Thanks for the message and your understanding!

Have a nice day!
