I’m new to tagdiv and the Newpaper theme so excuse my utter ignorance.
How do I enable a spell checker in the visual composer?

Sorry but i do not think there is a spell checker in visual composer. You can try this alternative solution though: http://www.wpbeginner.com/plugins/how-to-check-grammar-and-spelling-mistakes-in-wordpress/
