Hi,
We used to use a 3rd party plugin that allowed us to add star rating to each review we did on the website. This would show up in the search results.
When we switched to using the Newspaper theme and used the inbuilt Star rating system, we noticed the stars no longer show up in search results which is a bit of a bummer really for several reasons.
Is there some reason why this is happening and how to fix it?

The theme does not control the informations displayed by google in SERP, it depends on google if stars rating are displayed or not. When you make major changes in site’s html structure, like switching from one theme to another, google crawler needs some time until will understand the new structure and some infos may not be displayed for a while. Try to regenerate your sitemap and submit it to google, it may help: https://kb.yoast.com/kb/enable-xml-sitemaps-in-the-wordpress-seo-plugin/
