Hello,

I would like to refer you to the following post.

https://www.authorityhacker.com/google-freshness/

Do you have plans to implement this within the theme.

How can I replace the “date published” to show “last modified” using the https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-last-modified-info/ plugin.

R.

Same here. I am looking for a way to show published date, in case of an update, show modified date as well.
Plus, show the modified date in schema SERP results to highlight that the post is not many years old.
Please implement this is the next theme update.

Hi, I came here to ask exactly the same thing! We should have the option to choose what to show on SERP: publish date, last modified date or not showing date at all (while we can still show it on our post).

At the moment I’m also using the WP Last Modified Info plugin and to set it up properly, I need to know if Newspaper theme support Schema Markup. Could you answer me that, please!

Thanks! 🙂

Hi,

Yes our theme support schema markup, you can set the schema manually or using some plugins, if you want you can try one of this plugins:
https://wpmissing.com/plugins/best-wordpress-schema-structured-data-plugins/
https://www.wpsuperstars.net/rich-snippets-schema-plugins-for-wordpress/

Thank you!

Hi Calin, thanks for your help!

I received the following answer from WP Last Modified Info plugin and after that I will write my question:

“Hi,

You need to manually edit your theme files to fix this issue. Actually, your theme already has schema markups and Newspaper Theme does not use any filters.

To show only last modified date to SERPs, it is important to remove datePublished schema from your website: http://prntscr.com/mn5ls7”

1. So from what I could understand, if Newspaper theme had filters, we could easily set what to show or not from the Theme’s Panel, is that correct? Maybe that’s something you could add in the future! 😉

2. I’ll have to edit my theme files (which I have no clue how to do it, lol) but I understand that I will lose all the edit every time there’s a theme upgrade, right? Could I make this changes direct on the “custom code” area instead? How would that be?

Thanks for all the help!

Hi,

Removing the theme structured data would be possible if you remove it from the theme code only. Most of the structured data for the posts is located in this file
https://www.screencast.com/t/6afOnwYmF
The theme contains the basic required data, like author, date published, date modified, reviews etc. Only manually could this be removed.

Unfortunately yes you’ll lose all the changes when you’ll make some updates, what you can do is to make a copy/backup to those files and after updates you can compare the content and set it back if there was no changes.
For the moment this is the only way, may in feature will be some implementation for this.

Thanks

Options for this would be much appreciated.

Yes! I was so happy when I saw the new update had last update date in the article, only to find out later that’s only for cloud library. Well, it’s something at least! 🙂

If you guys want I can include here a step by step of how I solved this using the wp last modified info plugin. 🙂

Hi,

I can write this on our list of suggestion.

Thank you!

Post count: 11

rmeijden, can you please share how you did it?
I’m using this method to show last modified date on single posts: http://www.techbuzz.in/tagdiv-newspaper-theme-last-updated-modified-time.php

But, I’m not sure if the change is noticeable in the SERP’s, which is the whole purpose for doing this in the first place, to boost CTR.

As far as I know, the “datepublished” must be removed from the post’s code in order for Google to pick up the last modified date and show it, and only it in the SERP.

And I really don’t understand how a good theme like newspaper doesn’t have this feature in the first place.

Hi @michaelp,

The modified date is a new option in latest them version that allow you to display each date you want on blocks, you can use this option, or use the old one with publish date.

Please check the settings from theme panel -> https://www.screencast.com/t/H7CFzAKVw7 set the option with tagDiv Composer-> https://www.screencast.com/t/OAoAK9oUu make update on post -> https://www.screencast.com/t/vcQoLkQByxc now check the date of that post -> https://www.screencast.com/t/sKbLrp1jz also you can can sort after modified date -> https://www.screencast.com/t/VSePr63B

Also the modified date on post can be set with tagDiv Composer on single post template -> https://www.screencast.com/t/eYkeLqbCqV -> https://www.screencast.com/t/3qCSo9Nxtt

Hope this will help you!
Thanks.

That is great news indeed. Much appreciated.

Hi Calin, thanks for the reply.

I already enabled the option to show modified date on blocks and it’s working fine, and it’s a nice option to have.

But, although showing the last modified on blocks is nice and helpful, it doesn’t contribute to SEO, since it won’t be showing in the SERP’s.

Furthermore, I’m not using tagDiv Composer to build posts, I’m using Thrive Architect.

And I’m positive I’m not the only one, and I know that others are using Elementor.

So the method you showed doesn’t help me.

We need a simple option to delete or hide the published date and display last modified date instead so that Google and other search engines could pick it up and show it.

That’s the whole deal.

Looking forward to your reply.

Thanks.

Hi,

Those feature are made for our theme and our builder ( tagDiv Composer ), unfortunately we can not provide features in our theme for others builder, sorry; if you do not want to use our Composer, maybe you can use some plugins for Last Modified/Updated date, or maybe you can make some changes in theme file for blocks to achieve the modified date
-> https://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/the_modified_date

Thank you for your understanding!

Hi Calin,
Thank you for your reply.

I don’t think we understand each other.

I have set the blocks to show modified date and it’s working fine. No problem with that.

I have also set the single post template to show modified date after reading this tutorial: http://www.techbuzz.in/tagdiv-newspaper-theme-last-updated-modified-time.php

So, my posts are showing the modified date instead of publishing date.

The problem is that the:
<meta property=”article:published_time” content=”2019-03-04T16:26:51+00:00″ />

Is still visible in the post’s code.

And even though after using the WP Last Modified plug-in I also get this code on the same post:
<meta property=”article:modified_time” content=”2019-03-06T19:26:04+00:00″ />

Google won’t show the modified date on the SERP’s as long as the published_time/date is present in the post’s code.

The whole point of doing so is to increase CTR to the post by adding the “FRESHNESS” element to the post and show more up to date dates.

I don’t understand why your team can’t implement this somewhat simple feature that is available in a lot of other themes that don’t come close to the “Newspaper” quality.

I really want to understand.

Thanks again.

Hi Michael,

I’m quite busy here so as soon as I have the time I will write everything in detail (but you can see the thread telling which files on the theme to edit and how here: https://wordpress.org/support/topic/jason-ld-vs-inline-micro-data-again/#post-11270557 ).

About google not showing the last updated date, what the developer of the plugin was:

“Newspapaer theme by default uses Article type schema and datePublished is a mandatory property of Article Schema. So I told you to edit your theme file and disable those markups and you successfully did it. Now please wait upto 7 days as Google will fetch the new schema info very soon and it may take some time to show last modified date in SERPs. ”

But keep in mind that I am editing my texts directly on wordpress. So I know it’ll work there, just not sure about posts/pages built with plugins.

Hi @michaelp,

If you are using our templates from tagDiv Cloud Library this will be the results
-> http://prntscr.com/n113s7
-> https://www.screencast.com/t/anUUDgw9
If you do not want to use this you can use the guides from those topics:
-> https://forum.tagdiv.com/topic/how-to-make-this/
-> https://www.techprevue.com/show-last-updated-modified-date-newspaper-theme/

Thank you!
