I am using block 6 on the homepage.At the begining ,it shows full content of the articles.So,I go to Theme Panel -> Excerpts and select the EXCERPTS TYPE: On Letters(our site is Chinese). And it works with no specific number designated to the EXCERPT LENGTH box,but then I find out that I cann’t change the length of the excerpt. No matter what number I type into the EXCERPT LENGTH box, the frontend always the shows the same.
Seem that as long as you select EXCERPTS TYPE: On Letters ,the excerpt will work right away as a constant.The EXCERPT LENGTH numbers cann’t do nothing at all.

I also tried messing with formatting.php under the wp-inculdes folder with no luck.
Problem solved myself.
The EXCERPT LENGTH box applies to rss feed excerpt only and Block 6 is made of Module 9:)
another question:is there a way to change the sequence of the featured? The default is by freshness , the latest replace the last main big one.thanks.

For your second matter I believe you refer to the featured sort order which will get the posts from the featured category sorted by date. In this case you can set the filter to only show posts from the featured category then set a sort order for your posts: http://screencast.com/t/FYlvI0T49IhV
