Hello,
My hosting provider has told me “to contact website developer and ask them optimize the website scripts, DB, etc.” because the Newspaper theme keeps maxing out all my hosting resources.
Code they sent me from cPanel:

You might also try using some good plugins like wp-optimize, make sure your images are optimized (e.g., not loading 5MB image for home page vs 50kb), check to see if you have a member sign up script or contact form being abused (e.g., do NOT use “send auto reply” for forms as they can be used for people to send spam, by simply putting in somebody else’s email and putting spam topic on form, boom it gets sent to somebody from YOUR system); check the error logs for your domain via your web hosting account to see if you can narrow down a specific plugin causing the issue.
Some “third party” plugins are *not* fully compatible with WP 4.0 and sometimes you may two plugins doing same thing … I often see people using Yoast to make sitemap while also running a sitemap plugin, etc.
That might not apply to your situation, but just some feedback. Not having any issues with theme and the “recommended” plugins on our server, and we’re running some high usage stuff like auto thumbnail and thumbnail upsize, etc.
Hello Christopher,
For my images i have a SSL CDN for all my content including pictures, so size should’t matter too much but i still optimise my images, just in case.
I have WordPress register turned off, and have no forums on my website. The only accounts on my WordPress website are for editors only.
Your sitemap example is very interesting, so i’ll have to look into this and see if i have multiple plugins doing the same thing.
Thanks for the tips, i will check out the compatibility of my plugins and deactivate the ones that have large load times (listed above in previous post on this topic).
I’ve been working on this recently too, since I exceed my host’s CPU time now and then…
But yeah, looking at the profile you pasted there, since the plugin found that 85%+ of the load time was plugins, the theme is accounting for 15% or less and is not really your problem.
The profile points out Jetpack as 46%+. That’s a huge contribution to your load time. Minimize the features you’re using from it or find options that are more lightweight. E.g. instead of using its stats, use the theme’s built-in deployment of Google Analytics code.
Hide My WP is also contributing quite a bit. Are you sure you need it? A serious attacker would still be able to identify your site as a WP site if they looked at it… and a plugin like Wordfence is more lightweight and a highly recommended security plugin. That said, I by no means specialize in WP security so you might have other needs I’m not thinking of.
Wordpress SEO at almost 5% may be indispensable for you. Social Networks Auto Poster Facebook Twitter G might be easier to lose… as long as you’re using Jetpack, I believe it has its own autoposter. (It also has social sharing buttons, as does the theme, so I assume the reason you’re duplicating that functionality with Easy Social Share Buttons for WordPress β 0.0592 sec β 2.19% is that you don’t like the other options.)
The rest of these are very minimal contributors. Adminimize doesn’t contribute that much, but reading its description, it sounds totally cosmetic, so perhaps you can lose it.
@TheMediumUTM Thanks for the tips.
Jetpack: I’m now using only 4 features within this plugin. I’m now viewing my stats on Google and WordPress.com
Hide My WP: Since looking at your advice i’ve removed this plugin from my website. It’s true, i guess. If someone wanted to hack my website they could tell i’m using WordPress straight away. I’m using this plugin: ‘Wordfence Security’, so hopefully it will prevent hackers.
Wordpress SEO: I need some sort of SEO plugin to help with my news website. I believe this is one of the best?
Social Networks Auto Poster: This plugin saves time, really. I have it post to my social networks because it gives me more time to create new articles than trying to promote/share my content on social media, which takes up more time. Are there any better plugins than this one?
Easy Social Share Buttons: I removed the TagDiv share buttons because they weren’t loading fast enough. I found this plugin and it seems to have more features and allows me to customise it more.
Adminimize: Allows me to simplify the backend for my editors, and lets me hide specific plugins which i don’t want my team to see. But i suppose deactivating it creates more risk? Such as myCRED, most of the settings pop up for non-admin users, which i don’t want. See my problem? :/
Thanks π

You don’t need this also “JM Twitter Cards” the WordPress SEO already have that feature build in to they plugin..
The “Wordfence Security” is a very good plugin but if your using there “Live Traffic” feature then you going run in problems on your server end because it make ur CPU very high and use a lot of memory..i had to remove mine from my site and went with a more lightweight plugin call “All In One WP Security & Firewall”
Query Strings Remover you don’t need a plugin for that just add this code to the bottom of ur βfunctions.phpβ..
function remove_cssjs_ver( $src ) {
if( strpos( $src, β?ver=β ) )
$src = remove_query_arg( βverβ, $src );
return $src;
}
add_filter( βstyle_loader_srcβ, βremove_cssjs_verβ, 10, 2 );
add_filter( βscript_loader_srcβ, βremove_cssjs_verβ, 10, 2 );
Akismet you can removed if you use clouldflare because they protect you from comment spam in one those settings..
Thanks for the tips.
I will see if I can deactivate ‘JM Twitter Cards’ and use the SEO plugin for Twitter cards. There must of been a reason why i wanted another plugin, but can’t remember. I’m sure i’ll find out soon π
I’m now going to try ‘All In One WP Security & Firewall’ and see if that helps.
Which functions.php do i edit? The WP core or the themes?
EDIT: I can’t unfortunately use CloudFlare as i’m using a different CDN service.
I really think the culprit is that plugin Social Networks Auto Poster Facebook Twitter G β 0.1419 sec β 9.24%
the reviews on this plugin is so bad,seem every one complaining about the usage in memory..
Requires too much memory! By WillOfTheWeb, August 25, 2014 for WP 4.0
This plugin requires at least 64megs to run on the server which limits it to specific hosting packages.It’s a brilliant plugin but it just requires too much resources! π
You can still use CloudFlare just don’t use there “CDN service” but there is a lot more nice features that come with them,this week they giving FREE SSL Certificate to every one site that use they service..
The team at CloudFlare is excited to announce the release of Universal SSLβ’. Beginning today, we will support SSL connections to every CloudFlare customer, including the 2 million sites that have signed up for the free version of our service.
For all customers, we will now automatically provision a SSL certificate on CloudFlare’s network that will accept HTTPS connections for a customer’s domain and subdomains. Those certificates include an entry for the root domain (e.g., example.com) as well as a wildcard entry for all first-level subdomains (e.g., http://www.example.com, blog.example.com, etc.).
For a site that did not have SSL before, we will default to our Flexible SSL mode, which means traffic from browsers to CloudFlare will be encrypted, but traffic from CloudFlare to a site’s origin server will not. We strongly recommend site owners install a certificate on their web servers so we can encrypt traffic to the origin.
Later today we’ll be publishing a blog with instructions on how to do that at no cost. Once you’ve installed a certificate on your web server, you can enable the Full or Strict SSL modes which encrypt origin traffic and provide a higher level of security.
@Steven I see what you mean. I’ve currently deactivated it and i’ll see how I ‘cope’ with manually sharing the links on my social networks sites instead of automatically for a few days. Maybe i’m just lazy… But if it improves my sites performance and I keep the Newspaper themes, i guess it’s a positive.
I’ll provide my plugin results shortly.
Just having a problem with this code you sent me:
function remove_cssjs_ver( $src ) {
if( strpos( $src, β?ver=β ) )
$src = remove_query_arg( βverβ, $src );
return $src;
}
add_filter( βstyle_loader_srcβ, βremove_cssjs_verβ, 10, 2 );
add_filter( βscript_loader_srcβ, βremove_cssjs_verβ, 10, 2 );
When i add it to my function.php it causes my whole website to have a white screen and no code is found in the page source. What’s the fix for this? :s
Thanks π
With your Speed Booster Pack settings:
1.Loads javascript files from Google Libraries
2.Defers parsing of javascript files.
3.Removes query strings from static resources
4.Load CSS asynchronously
5.Minify all CSS styles
6.Insert all CSS styles inline to the footer
Remove junk header tags
Is there a way to stop the Google Adsense Ads loading first? When you access a page, it’s all white for a second, then the ads popup in the wrong places then the css kicks in and the whole page looks correct again.
Thank you π
Fixed O.O
I should really hire you @Steven for my website π haha
