Regarding the theme update..i downloaded the wordpress zip file and when i tried to install, it said install failed becuase directory exists. why isnt there a way to update without needing to uninstall the current? I dont want to lose all my customization.

Any changes you made to the original theme files will be over-written regardless, so you should keep track of those.
When you update theme, most settings for theme are retained due to WordPress “transient” settings. Usually the only thing that sometimes gets “munched” is a couple of sidebar settings, that you can resave. Also you often need to go to your home page and just “save” it again.
You can also “export” your theme settings from the theme panel at bottom, which is good habit to get into 🙂

Only the file custom code modification are lost, the theme settings (the ones you made on Theme Panel, the menus, etc….) won’t be lost. If you kept the original directory (Newspaper) you could just switch to another theme, delete Newspaper, then install and activate the latest version.
Before each update create a backup for database and files, if something goes wrong with the update you can revert to the previous setup and try again.
