I have some questions about the thumbnails.
Lets see for example the template 13 without sidebars. The featured image has a fixed width of 1068px.
My goal is to set the height, so I changed the thumbnail to td_1068x508. I was hoping for the height of the image to be cropped but nothing happened.
Should the height be cropped or is not that how the thumbnails work?

The height is grabbed by the image itself. The thumb is 1068 x 0 which means it does not specify a particular height and rather lets the image use the aspect ratio and show up in full height. The easiest way to control the height of post style 13 is to upload wide images so they will not be too high and take up more of the screen than necessary.

If you change it to another thumb you have to regenerate the thumbnails afterwards. If I change it to 1068×580 it works fine.
It is 580, not 508. Please check this list to see all available thumbnails:
