I am switching to Newspaper theme but am still not able to decide which thumbnail regenerator to use. So far I remember reading documents, you have recommended three plugins at different places: Regenerate Thumbnails, Force Regenerate Thumbnails and Thumbnail Upscale. Which one works the best with Newspaper theme when switching from another theme? I have around 700 images in media gallery most of them used in some 300 posts so I really would like to take an informed decision. Thanks.
Hello,
If you switch from another theme, it;s best to delete the old thumbnails as the other theme most certainly did not use the same thumbs as our theme, so you will have a lot of extra thumbs from both themes. In this case it is recommended to use ‘force regenerate’ as it will delete the old thumbnails as well not just replace the old ones.
I hope this helps.
Thank you!
That was very helpful! One more question before I delete the old thumbs. What could potentially go wrong if I keep thumbnails from both the themes? Can it affect the speed performance? I would like to hear your opinion. I am asking as I am thinking what if I want to switch back and forth between the old theme and your theme for some reason… Or say I want readers to choose between the old and the new theme. In that case if the old thumbs are there then they can come to ready use. Is that correct? Most probably I will delete the old thumbs as you suggested but your reply to this will surely help. Thanks, Bogdan!
FYI
I use thumbnail upscale as a ‘helper’ for WordPress as it fixes issue where WP turns off support for “enlarging” images such as for home page slider, etc. You can leave this active all the time.
I use “Regenerate Thumbnails” and works great on all my sites/server.
Some people use “Force Regenerate” if the regular one doesn’t work.
You can turn off the regen plugin(s) until you need them. Even remove them entirely after the initial run 🙂
Ok great info. Thanks. One thing is, some images just don’t show up correctly and leave empty space around even after regenerating thumbnails. Examples https://gyazo.com/ce895cacc6912639cb4a0bbc2dc6b004 and https://gyazo.com/72e507e86c657cdf74e5ddbb6a383e38.
An image on a new post (with newly uploaded image) also left empty space at the bottom. https://gyazo.com/d4b4aa577c0d7cad7bb2ffa839bd1259
I thought the theme would resize / expand newly uploaded images according to the chosen grid size and then crop it as described in the documentation. Have I misunderstood it? Any clue as to what could be going wrong? Thanks.
Yes Chris, I did read your post but it’s possible the upscale plugin was deactivated when I uploaded that particular image. I will monitor future uploads and results keeping upscale on. Thanks.
So far I can understand upscale will do its magic on new uploads, but what about the hundreds of other images that are already uploaded and attached? (I have switched to Newspaper from another theme). To keep my old thumbnails I have used the Regenerate thumbnails plugins. Do you think if instead I use Force Regenerate it will make a difference? The problem of white space only appears on Grids, not on post pages. The same featured images look full width on posts if I changes the Post setting to show them as such.
I rechecked keeping Upscale on and uploaded a new image. Here is the result https://gyazo.com/9cd35941d4644edec9ef28b178177c6f It still shows white space.
Hi,
You need to use the thumbnail upscale plugin together with ‘force regenerate’. You need to regenerate you thumbs again for the upscale to take effect. Please also try this without other plugins (disable all other ones except visual composer, thumbnail upscale and force regenerate) so you can avoid plugin conflicts.
Thanks.
I used thumbnail upscale plugin together with ‘force regenerate’ and the result is still the same: blank space on image in slide: http://www.murderparty.it.
Any suggestion?
Thanks
Hi,
Your site does not have neither blank spaces in images nor slide elements: http://screencast.com/t/8tmDiH5yr1b
Thank you!
