I updated my website from Newspaper 7 to 8, ever since the update I have been unable to change my homepage because as I worked on it, each time I try to add a sidebar it distorts the whole page. Even after discovering the widget sidebar, I tried it but no success.

In some cases when both Visual composer and the tagDiv composer are active, some issue can be present. If you are using Visual composer, try to deactivate the tagDiv editor and see if this has any effect. Please let us know if this solves the problem.
Also maybe you have custom code in the theme panel, or a child theme active. These could be the cause as well.

I deactivated all plugins except Visual Composer

So I am assuming deactivating the plugins did not solve the issue. If the page was created using Visual composer, then please check if the tagDiv composer plugin is disabled. Then try to configure the page as you want using Visual composer.
It would be helpful if we could see the problem through a screenshot, or by a link to your website where this problem is present.
Something must be interfering with the theme in order to break the layout like you say. Please check any custom code you might have entered in the theme panel sections, and remove it as a test.

Thanks for your response Simion, in my last post, I should have said that all plugins were disabled except td composer, though I have also enabled Visual composer yet I still can’t add sidebar.
I think I should also explain that I watched the video tutorial on how to created a webpage in 3 minutes I followed all the instructions till I got to were I needed to add a sidebar to my webpage. that was when I ran into problem. As you can see from the link https://africanquarters.com/?page_id=4049 every thing is okay except that when I clicked on the last element to add a sidebar just like what I saw on the video, instead of the sidebar appearing beside that element only, it pushes up to the top of the page and distorts the whole page.
