I noticed today that we are no longer able to save changes through the theme panel on any of our sites (multisite setup).
After pressing the update button, the loading icon appears and keeps loading without ever saving or updating (we left our last attempt run for two hours to no avail).
A search in the forum pointed to the max_input_vars issue, which has been changed to 20000 and everything now shows as green in the theme status, however the issue persists.
We have also tried disabling all plugins to be safe, but still unable to save and update.

Check if there are any errors in the browser inspector console, while saving a setting in the theme panel.
Server security modules or firewalls may block the admin ajax denying access to the theme. In similar cases the issue was caused by that

Admin-Ajax.php calls from the network tab also return 200 result, so a fire-wall or connection issue doesn’t seem to be the cause of this problem we’re experiencing
