I was emailed a message telling me there was an update to the theme however when logged in WP there is no mention of this. Do we need to manually upload and update this theme? My worry is any files that may overwrite customized files

If you are using the envato plugin for update is possible sometimes to not synchronize with the last updates and you’ll need to make the update manually.
We recommend to make first an update on localhost or on sub-domain and only after that to make it to the live website.
Also we recommend to make first a full backup to your website.
All settings in theme panel will remain, only the changes in theme files will be override.

Before you make some updates please make sure that you make a full backup to your website.
After you make the update please check the theme plugins and activate tagDiv Composer if this plugin is not activated, also if you are using cloud templates activate tagDiv Cloud library too.
