Unfortunately updating from an old version such as 3.9 will be as switching to a whole different theme. All the code was changed since then and many options are not there anymore and many others took their place. The best thing we can recommend is to recreate the parts of the website that do not work anymore. We will try to help out along the way.
Sorry for the inconvenience but this is the case with old versions of the theme.

Hello,
Posts and pages and other settings that are kept in the database will not be affected by the update. Their styling is a different matter. Css has changed and probably the post template will not be the one from your old version anymore so it will require a bit of work to adjust the settings for them.

I updated the plugin Visual Bakery.
and now I can see the demo templates.
ok now I am very pissed,.
Things are not working as they should.
I cannot choose any templates in the updated Visual Composer.
My client is giving me until wednesday to get this in order.

Hello Baldvin,
You will have to play with the settings a bit and get used to the new layout of the theme and visual composer. Please provide an example of what templates you cannot add to your website. You can add elements in Visual composer like so: http://screencast.com/t/4PRDVYCcPvD It is not very different than the old version. If you don not have these options or some of them do not work, please try to disable all plugins except visual composer to rule out a plugin conflict. Plugins that worked in the old version could not work in the current one.

Do you recomend I update the plugins one by one after I have set the site up?

Hi Baldvin,
Unfortunately you will have to identify the plugin that creates the issue and find another one to replace it with. If it creates problems, it must be removed and/or replaced with some other one that does not create issues.
