We just updated to the latest version of Newsmag and our site is now blank and the dashboard is blank too.
We get this error message
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ‘[‘, expecting ‘)’ in /var/www/vhosts/flavourmag.co.uk/httpdocs/wp-content/themes/Newsmag/includes/wp_booster/td_menu.php on line 191
For now i’ve removed [‘show_child_cat’]
What can we do about this?

Hi,
Try to modify the code like this – http://screencast.com/t/vMwhbgBbmKmT
Let me know if it works for your.
Thank you.
I recently purchased the Newsmag theme & just received an email about an update which I downloaded from Themeforest but I have the same problem.
Initially I followed the documentation regarding installing but the update failed with a message about the directory already existing. So I used ftp to upload the new version. Then gI ot the “Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ‘[‘, expecting…” error which broke the site. So I deleted the whole Newsmag directory tree reverted to default theme then installed the new version of the theme downloaded direct from Themeforest & installed & activated that but I still get this error.
I have had to revert to the the version that I downloaded from Themeforest when I purchased the theme last week.
It looks like your update is broken. I don’t expect to have to edit code to get this working. Please update the download on Themeforest to a file that will install & work correctly
Supposedly it’s a minor code incompatibility with some web hosting companies still running old/outdated versions of PHP code. We’re not having any issues with our server which was deployed as of Dec. 2014.
Basically, your hosting co is running some ooooold code still for client compatibility, which they should be forcing their clients to move to “modern” codebase for performance and security.
NOT your fault !
Supposedly you either have to
a) roll back to prior version of theme
b) edit couple of files temporarily to use 1.7.0
c) wait for 1.7.1 to be posted / and approved by / ThemeForest …
I don’t work here, just what I’ve gleaned from the replies from Marius for those having issues when many are not having issues at all on the basic upgrade/install procedure.
