After I updated to Newspaper v 8.6, all widgets are gone. Not totally, but moved to the “inactive widgets” area. A lot of work to sort them all back. Is that a bug or must it be?
Yes, welcome to WordPress. That is what happens when you change themes.
There are some plugins which try to address that, but WP has always done that – otherwise if you had a custom plugin or widget code running, when changing themes entire site might crash due to missing code/functions, etc.
Theme does not control that; totally part of WordPress. There is some mention on the WP dev forum that they will be trying to come up with solution for that in the big giant next version of WP (5.0).
