Unfortunately customization will be lost if you modified the files that were updated. Depending on the version from which you update from, you can use the included patch you can find in the theme files and simply replace your files with the ones from the patch. If one of the files found in this patch is one you modified on your end, then you need to adapt your modification to the new file.

If you did not change any code lines inside the theme files, then nothing will be lost. All your settings from the theme panel and your posts/pages/categories are stored in the database. They will not be affected by the update. Only hard-coded customization, the type in which you change the code inside the theme files.
