Upgrade steps – Newspaper 7.4 to 12.5

Hello tagDiv team,

I will help someone to upgrade their Newspaper 7.4 to the latest version 12.5. They are postponing this for too much time, but now due the PHP version mandatory update from 5.6 to 7.x or 8.x they will do the upgrade. I know that it will need rebuild due to the “TD composer” on newer versions, and its ok. I still have some questions:

– on which version of php do you recommend to switch? Currently they are on 5.6.37 and i need to choose between 7.4 and 8.0/8.1
– is needed to do the upgrade in two steps to an intermediary version(Newspaper 8,9,10 etc) or I can jump directly to Newspaper 12.5?

Thanks,
Claudiu

Hello,

I recommend doing the update on a staging website because there are a lot of changes.
Also, you can use PHP version 8.0 or 8.1, depending on what plugins you use.
Also, update WordPress. You can jump to version 12.5, and make the changes.
In the worst cases, the settings in the theme panel may be lost (there have been isolated cases), in these cases, after the theme plugins that were previously used are activated, you will have to use a backup for the theme panel -> https://forum.tagdiv.com/import-export-theme-settings/
Also, if you want, you can contact our custom work team here and they can help you to update the theme safely: https://tagdiv.com/premium-customization-services/

Thank you!

Thanks Anamaria. You answered all my questions. Losing the theme panel settings is not a big thing. I will do a visual refresh on the website anyway based on one of the pre-build layouts you provide.

You can close this topic.
Thanks again,
Claudiu

Hi Claudiu,

I recommend using cloud templates for the new design and disabling the tagdiv standard pack plugin.

Thank you!
