Is this a reported error? Will downgrading my version bring my sidebar/widgets back or will I have to recreate them? Thank you.

Hi,
Please see if your widgets are not set in inactive widgets.
Is possible that during the update the theme to be disable and then the sidebar widgets will lose the position. Usually when you are using widgets is better to use the manually update, the option B from here -> https://tagdiv.com/update-newspaper-theme/
Also if you do not have a theme backup to restore, then are less chances to get theme back.
