I have found a lot of similar cases to the forum, but not a real solution.
The problem:
Images that are linked to external http links do not work. Instead they try to open modal window which leads to “The Image #x Could Not Be Loaded” error.
My settings:
Image link is set to custom url
General Modal Image is ON
Individual modal image is OFF
The modal class is added.
IF I turn General Modal Image to OFF then the above issue is no more, BUT, the modal window doesn’t work for the all the other cases where it should (to show zoomed images).
Please advise how it is possible to have the modal work only to links that end up with .jpg, .png, .gif etc

Unfortunately the modal image will not work for images that have external links set to them. In this case you will have to disable the general modal from the theme panel and set it manual for every image when you create a post: http://screencast.com/t/YHsUggZli
You can have one of them. Either a custom link or a modal image. Unfortunately we do not have a solution to get both an external link and the modal image.

Thanks for the reply. I think this is probably one of the most serious issues of an otherwise amazing theme.
Turning general modal off breaks the modal for thousands of images in the back-log (impossible to go and change one by one) and turning it on breaks the links (terrible since we use images with links to 3rd party sites often).
Would it be possible to create a class and use the :not() selector (http://www.w3schools.com/jquery/sel_not.asp) so that global modal is ON but if there is a non-image link this class is applied?

Unfortunately there is no easy solution we can provide for this. We are aware of this issue and we are working on a better implementation of the lightbox. Sorry for the inconvenience. I did however run a few tests with a modal image plugin called WP Lightbox 2 and it seems to work. This is not an official test however, just a simple suggestion until we are able to provide a different implementation for our modal image.
