Typically you’d use the recaptcha plugin or similar which hooks into Google’s recaptcha API -or- an alternative. This one has gotten some good reviews, but I’ve not yet tried it. http://wordpress.org/plugins/botdetect-wp-captcha/

we’ve used this one for years, but it looks like the person managing it is moving on to other things; note that since Google has started doing plugins for WP, they make take it on: http://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-recaptcha/

the developer of that has recommended looking at this as an alternative

how do I add it to the form though? It is using the buddypress registration form, and when I click on that page to edit it I can’t seem to find a form anywhere.

Normally when you install the plugin it will attach itself to the built-in ‘hooks’ for registration forms such as comment box, registration, etc.

See the help for the specific plugin you choose.

FYI
Google is a great resource for doing this kind of search

add captcha to buddypress registration

http://buddypress.org/support/topic/how-to-control-spam-registration/

the summary from above seems to be:

Rename (not remove) wp-signup.php

Use custom bp-register slug

Removed “powered by” type text in the footer and other obviously WP / BP phrases

Installed NoSpamNX

Installed WP-BAN

Installed SI Captcha

Employed the .htaccess rules explained here: http://wpmututorials.com/how-to/spam-blogs-and-buddypress/

Nothing’s perfect against spam, but certainly for me, these things have helped.
