Since Newspaper theme does not have support for multiple authors yet (you mentioned it is a planned feature, not yet implemented), I wonder if it would have any unintended consequences if we used the ‘via’ field in a cloud template to display additional authors (if the article does have any).
Around 1 percent of our articles have multiple authors, so generally that is not an issue, but this would be a sort of temporal solution for these rare cases.
But I wonder the ‘via’ field is in any way represented as a special kind of structured data field in article tags, meta descriptions? That is to say, if we used it for these purposes would it affect the article’s interpretation by google or other search sites in any way?
(By the way, what is the original purpose of this field? I understand of course what “Source” is, but I was never able to grasp the idea behind the ‘Via’ field.)

Yes you can use via in cloud to display the name of authors, there are no particular affects.
Via is a normal field for the provider/s of article source ( In the online article or blog post this have the sense of “from”).
