I did a recent update to WordPress 4.5, and then followed suit with NewsMag (using the Envato Toolkit).
I’m finding something very strange —
VC doesn’t seem to load when I go to edit a page; it has a ‘loading’ circle icon, but then when it finally loads, nothing happens —

When I create a new page, it sort of loads – but clicking ‘add text’, or ‘add element’ (and subsequently clicking any element) doesn’t result in anything.
Is the issue to fix this the same as here: https://forum.tagdiv.com/topic/visual-composer-issue-5/
or have I stumbled on a new problem?

Make sure you’re using last plugin’s version included in theme’s path, 4.11.2, clear all caches and test again: https://forum.tagdiv.com/newsmag-how-to-update-visual-composer-plugin/

Great news, it worked! Thanks for that!
However, I’m still having issues with custom permalinks — the home page won’t load since doing an update on both wordpress core and the theme… I had hoped that it may have been VC that was somehow breaking it.
If I keep it to the standard ‘post-id’ style, it works, but anything else it breaks.
Any thoughts / ideas?

Try to re-save your permalinks under Settings > Permalinks: http://screencast.com/t/vbIEUD93t1V then test again.

RE: permalinks – I’ve tried that a few different times.
I’ve also just setup another site (from scratch) with wordpress 4.5.1, and the latest version of NewsMag downloaded from envato (this one included Visual Composer v4.11.2) – and that site isn’t working either. I switch themes to a WordPress default, and it loads no problems.
Definitely ‘feels’ like something theme related.
