I know normally you always should upgrade when the software supplier releases a new version. Especially the minor and maintenance releases. But so far I’ve not felt the need to make the switch to Newsmag 3. Why not? A couple of reasons:
- I haven’t been able to find a good list with What’s New in v3. What I get from the release notes it looks more like a v2.4 version. What is the really big change to v2?
- v2.3.7 works just fine for us!
- There’s always lots of traffic from visitors to our site. So I really want to keep the downtime to an absolute minimum.
What are good reasons to for v3 anyway?
And Tagdiv: For how long will the v2 branch be maintained? Primarily meaning that it will not break with future WP updates?

If the current theme’s version that you’re using on the site works fine then you can keep it but we always recommend to update the theme to the latest version available. The update at V 3 it’s a major one, lots of new features we’re added and also many bugs were fixed: http://screencast.com/t/XgpHhrNvJsf Note that if you decide to update the theme it’s also needed to update Visual Composer and Social Counter plugins to new version included in theme’s path.
The update process shouldn’t take to much time and you can put the site in maintenance mode using a plugin with a specific functionality. With my fingers crossed and backups in place I did the upgrade. And you’re right that it’s fairly simple to do. But since we have over a dozen of bulky plugins I always get cold sweat with updates like these.
What I do by the way, is simply rename the (folder) new version to Newsmag_3_1 and upload it next to the previous versions. I don’t see a reason why that should’t work, is it? And then I update our child theme accordingly. (CSS & functions.php).

It’s a good practice to carefully test each new installed plugin and make sure that won’t affect site’s functionality. Our theme is tested only with these plugins: http://screencast.com/t/P8qdYcbVkxZ and any aditionl plugin y create issues. Also it’s not recommend to keep two copies of the theme in your wp-install, it may create conflicts in some cases.
