What would be causing this error

Domain Name followed by /wp-content/themes/Newsmag/

It’s an internal 500 error

Hello bformhals,

The 500 Internal Server Error is a very general HTTP status code that means something has gone wrong on the website’s server, but the server could not be more specific on what the exact problem is. You should contact your hosting provider because they should be able to provide a more accurate response.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the message!

I know the standard error meaning. This has to do with Newsmag and the content folder. What should permissions be set at on that folder as that can also cause this error

This should be in the FAQs, actually … if there were one.

When you do a theme update, your folder is temporarily exposed and Google may try to index it, but there is nothing there to “execute” and so you get an error. Usually you will see (1) of these in your Google Search Console each time you do a theme update since the theme has to be removed, then reinstalled, and if Google “looks” at the site while it happens -bam- you get that error.

Getting one error at update is normal.

Getting dozens means hack attempt.

Often you can simply have an index.php file there saying “this is not a public page.”

Yes, that is where I saw it in the Search Console. So how do I tell it to not create that error? Should I just click its Fixed

Yep. That’s what I do on 20 sites. 🙂

This is why some folks “suggest” using a maintenance plugin and turning that on prior to doing any site updates. But most of us too lazy to do that, myself included!
