There’s a conflict between Newspaper (version 8.1 and above) and BackupBuddy scheduled backups. I deactivated all other plugins, I switched to WP Twenty Seventeen, the compatibility issue comes from your theme.
With your theme activated, the backups don’t work, it impacts the cron task (it removes it or alter it, I’m not sure). This is a major issue with one of the most popular backup plugins in the world.
I posted the same message in the comments at Envato 2 months ago and I thought your colleague would forward it but apparently he didn’t do it, the issue has not been fixed in the meantime.
Can you contact iThemes Support about this issue?

Probably useful to send the error logs showing WHAT the actual error is, to TagDiv by email.
Here is iThemes (BackupBuddy) support reply on this:
“It is not a conflict, it is simply a bug in the theme – there is a big difference. As their customer (of a premium theme product) you can contact their support and report the issue caused by their theme so they can resolve it for you. If they need to have the issue explained to them then by all means they can contact us and we can advise them concerning the bug in the theme. By way of information you can direct them to the WordPress Codex information: https://codex.wordpress.org/Plugin_API/Filter_Reference/cron_schedules which will assist them in fixing the bug in their theme.”
Duplicator works fine with Newspaper.
we have this bug since 7.8.1 , all plugins that are using cron schedules not working, this makes new versions useless for many of us

Sorry for this inconvenience but please notice that all of the premium themes are custom made and it’s great chances that some plugins will not work. Also, please keep in mind that we will not adjust the theme for this plugin for making to bring good results because this task involves doing such a custom work and this is not included in our project and the time does not allow us to do this, sorry! Please understand this thing! Another alternative would be to starting yourself to develop this case and trying to make it yourself to do this. Also, if you are not aware of the steps which are needed to take in this case, please consider hiring a freelancer/developer to help you, because we cannot provide support for untested plugins! usually, we recommend the developers from studio.envato.com

As a general note, we’re not having any issues here with any of our cron scheduling with the TagDiv themes. Sorry not helping, just a note.

We’re managing more than 3’670 sites using premium themes and this issue is happening only with your theme.
We have 65 developers, do you want us to debug your theme for you? As it’s a bug, there’s no other word for that: IT’S A BUG. You’re not respecting WP guidelines.

Please keep in mind that I can only provide you just technical support for our theme and cannot provide any service implementation for untested plugins, sorry! Unfortunately, we do not have a plugin for backup because we make this only via FTP way because this is the surest method in this case and encourage our clients to use this method. Sorry, but we do not have bought this plugin and we do not have any plan for this, sorry! If our theme is not compatible with this plugin and if you feel that our product does not fit to your project, please let us know and we will give a refund, sorry! Also, notice that we have nothing against if your team wants to adjust our theme with this plugin. You are free to do that!
