Is there a way we can make the slider images and the front page and featured images have like a hover-zoom effect?

Unfortunately the theme doesn’t have this option, but this will be available from version 5 of the Newspaper.

Yes, we work on this to add zoom effect on Big Grid also on newsmag theme.
