I’ve been rejected by them before – that was a couple of years ago on a totally different site. I got a Google News sitemap plugin, which I didn’t before, so hopefully that will help since I now have a news XML sitemap in addition to the general XMl sitemap.

I’ve seen a lot of sites on Google News that have horrible design and godawful content, in some cases just recycled press releases and rehashes of other people’s stories. So I’m inclined to believe that contrary to what they would claim, quality of content and presentation don’t rank high in their criteria. I think what they’re looking for is frequency – if you’re posting sizable amounts of content daily (even if it’s junk) they will consider you a news operation, otherwise they’ll consider you a hobby/personal blog.

I’ve recently spotted two sites that use Newspaper on Google News, so I’m sorry to say that I don’t believe the theme is the reason for the rejection. I’m getting ready to apply to Google News myself – crossing my fingers …

Here’s a screenshot (from another theme … sorry) that shows more or less what I’d like to see with standard posts when using Module 1 – headline, full-size featured image, excerpt, “Read more” button. If there’s way to accomplish this, that would be super!

I think I may have found the answer in a previous thread – adding this to advanced CSS to hide sidebar:

Is that right? I was confused because the thread (https://forum.tagdiv.com/topic/hidding-sidebar-on-mobile/) also talked about hiding the footer, which I don’t want.

Thanks guys! I was able to achieve what I wanted using Block 3 and Module 6.

Thanks Steven! The homepage is set to Module 6, not Module 5. I switched to Block 3 per your advice and that got rid of the excerpt. Block 3 is vertical, I think having the content layed out horizontally looks neater, but I guess there’s no way get rid of the excerpts otherwise?

You see this kind of ad usually on really big sites (IMDB, Huffington Post) or on sites that have a well-established niche audience, which is what I’m trying to be. Sometimes the background is just visible on the left and right, but sometimes it also pushes the content down. This is just done on the desktop version of the site, of course, since there’s no way to do this on mobile.
